So I tried to change these to Legacy Forms -> Checkboxes (b/c I thought it may be a compatibility issue) if I click in the "blank" area I can see that the content control checkbox is still there, but it is seemingly "invisible" (the check box is gone and a "blank" space exists where the checkbox was. In 2010 when the user hits a spacebar it makes the box visibility null. When using 2013 the spacebar can be used to "check" a box.
